The motto "Liberté, Equalité, Fraternité", was initially aimed at uniting and inspiring revolutionaries to fight for the three ideals of freedom, equality and brotherhood. The ideals were the foundation of the 'new France' that the revolutionaries sought. The motto stated that without basic freedoms and rights, there was no reason to live.
