Abraham Lincoln believed in union and liberty as being intertwined, so slavery’s expansion had to be halted, and the common agreement on slavery with the South then disappeared into the cauldron of war. He also believed as president, his job was to aid citizens to make informed decisions that would prove helpful in advancing the Union’s war effort.
