Why do critics have called for a change in the electoral college system

Because the system is obsolete.

Because with the electoral college, popular vote doesn't really matter. The electoral college consists of representatives for each state's votes, and we choose presidents that way, which is really indirect democracy because each individual vote doesn't really matter like in a direct democracy.
