poorly controlled diabetes eventually leads to damage of the body organs, amputations generally start at the toes or feet , therefore if an infection spreads, it can become so severe that the tissues become dead, due to gangrene  and the only option for the doctor is to amputate the feet or toes to save gangrene from spreading.
