What was one of the most important influences brought to Japan from China?

Probably Buddhism. Buddhism isn't Chinese, but it was probably brought over by Chinese-Buddhist missionaries. 

If not that, then probably the Chinese writing system. The Japanese adapted the language and used it in their everyday writing.
