The Chinenese interaction with the West differed completely to that of the Japanese.

Despite various attempts to establish trade with China by the British and the Portuguese, the Chinese rejected these offers contemptously - telling the British that the Chinese Empire received all that it needed from its tributories - and therefore did not need Western trade.
