In normal, healthy adults, the resting respiratory rate is 12 to 20 breaths per minute. If an adult is exhibiting a breathing rate of 26 breaths per minute, which is greater than the average, then the depth of their breaths should be assessed along with their mental condition. These factors come together in determining the cause of the elevated breathing rate.
