The Aztec people created man-made islands to accommodate their growing population. They would drive long pilings deep into the lake bed and add dirt from the shore. This provided them with places to grow food and eventually a place to live. The small Islands grew and were connected by bridges. Eventually, after conquering the neighbors that had once threatened them, the Aztecs would create long bridges to connect their island city with the main land.
