The answer is public conformity and private beliefs. The daily flag salutation by school children in the United States is an endeavor to use public conformity to build private beliefs. In addition, private conformity happens when people truly believe that the group is right, while public conformity happens when we are tense to adapt to group norms. Once publicly conforming, people still privately contemplate the group is mistaken.
